The colours awarded to the 'British Musqueteers'. This Regiment, numbered 96th, was raised in 1779 when Spain declared war in connection with the American Revolution. It existed until 1783, when it was disbanded.Although there was no direct connection between this unit and the later 96th that eventually became part of the Manchester Regiment, the Musqueteers' colours were presented to this unit in 1879. They were kept in the Officer's Mess until the 2nd Battalion was amalgamated in 1948. They were then sent to the Regimental Museum in Ashton-under-Lyne.
